Secret Lair x The Hobbit: Smaug's Spoils vs Desolation of Smaug — Which Drop Should You Collect?

Quick answer

If you're drawn to the dragon's hoard and want a drop that celebrates Smaug's greed, choose Smaug's Spoils. If you prefer the darker, journey-focused side of Bilbo's adventure through Mirkwood and beyond, Desolation of Smaug is your pick. Both offer unique art and themes, so your choice comes down to aesthetic preference and budget.

The Secret Lair x The Hobbit series brings J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth to Magic: The Gathering with a fresh artistic lens. Among the drops, Smaug's Spoils and Desolation of Smaug stand out as two distinct takes on the dragon's legacy. While both celebrate the same story, they highlight different moments: one focuses on the treasure hoard itself, the other on the desolation left in Smaug's wake.

In this comparison, we'll break down the key differences between these two drops—art direction, thematic focus, and value—so you can decide which one deserves a spot in your collection. Whether you're a lore enthusiast, an art collector, or a player looking for unique cards, we've got the details you need.

Artistic Direction: Treasure vs. Ruin

Smaug's Spoils is all about the dragon's hoard. The artwork, created by David Astruga, Brandon L. Hunt, and Gaboleps, hides heirlooms of Erebor among goblets, crowns, rings, and relics. The pieces are rich with gold and gems, capturing the overwhelming greed of Smaug. Each card feels like a glimpse into a treasure-filled cavern, where every shining object is a testament to the dragon's greatness.

Desolation of Smaug takes a starkly different approach. It focuses on the aftermath—the destruction and darkness that follows the dragon. The art likely portrays Mirkwood's hungry dark, the Lonely Mountain's shadow, and the ruin left by Smaug. This drop is more somber and atmospheric, appealing to those who appreciate the darker side of Tolkien's world.

• Smaug's Spoils: vibrant, gold-heavy art with hidden details.
• Desolation of Smaug: moody, dark landscapes and a sense of foreboding.

Thematic Focus: The Dragon's Greed vs. The Journey's Peril

Smaug's Spoils centers on the dragon itself. The description emphasizes that every shining thing is proof of Smaug's greatness. This drop is for fans who love the iconic dragon and the legendary hoard. It's about the allure of treasure and the danger that comes with it.

Desolation of Smaug, on the other hand, is about the journey. It starts with Bilbo's adventure, which begins with songs and supper but soon turns perilous. The drop captures the transition from the comfort of the Shire to the dangers of the Wild. It's for those who appreciate the narrative arc of The Hobbit and the trials Bilbo faces.

• Smaug's Spoils: perfect for dragon enthusiasts and treasure hunters.
• Desolation of Smaug: ideal for fans of the adventure and its darker moments.

Value and Collectibility

Both drops are priced at $15.00 (with a comparison price of $29.99), making them equally accessible. However, their collectibility may differ based on art style and theme. Smaug's Spoils might appeal more to collectors who favor iconic dragon imagery, while Desolation of Smaug could attract those who value atmospheric and narrative-driven art.

The foil editions are also available for both drops, priced at $20.00 for Smaug's Spoils Foil Edition and $30.00 for the Desolation of Smaug Foil Edition (with comparison prices of $39.99 and $59.99 respectively). Foil versions often hold higher value for collectors, but the choice between them still comes down to personal preference.

• Both non-foil drops are $15.00, making them budget-friendly.
• Foil editions add a premium feel; consider the extra cost if you want that shine.

Trade-offs to consider

• Art style: Smaug's Spoils offers bright, treasure-filled scenes; Desolation of Smaug presents dark, foreboding landscapes. Choose based on your aesthetic preference: vibrant or moody.
• Thematic depth: Smaug's Spoils focuses on the dragon's greed; Desolation of Smaug emphasizes the journey's peril. Consider which aspect of The Hobbit resonates more with you.
• Budget: Both non-foil drops are $15.00, but foil editions cost more ($20 vs $30). Decide if the foil finish is worth the extra cost for your collection.
