Quick answer
Choose Magic Academy if you want classic wizard-school flavor with a serious tone. Pick Notebook Genius if you prefer playful, margin-doodle art that celebrates the lighter side of academia.
Art style and theme
Magic Academy leans into traditional Magic: The Gathering fantasy—think robes, spellbooks, and dramatic magical duels. Notebook Genius, by contrast, embraces the chaotic energy of a student who treats their notebook as a canvas for side sketches and daydreams, with art by Mica Angela Hendricks that feels like a personal, whimsical journal.
Collector vs. player appeal
Both are Foil Editions, so they share the premium foiling that collectors love. However, Magic Academy may appeal more to players building themed Commander decks around wizard tribal or school settings. Notebook Genius is more of a collector's piece—its art is less likely to fit into a typical deck, but it stands out as a unique, conversation-starting addition to any binder.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Magic Academy: Delivers a classic, serious fantasy academic vibe that integrates easily into wizard-themed decks and collections.
- Notebook Genius: Offers a playful, relatable art style that feels like a personal diary—great for collectors who value unique, offbeat aesthetics. If you want the art to match typical MTG fantasy, go Magic Academy. If you want something that breaks the mold, go Notebook Genius.
- Foil quality: Both are Foil Editions, so you get the same premium foiling treatment. The difference is purely in the art and theme.
Product details
- Notebook Genius Foil Edition: The Notebook Genius Foil Edition features art by Mica Angela Hendricks that captures the academic tradition of writing the date, adding three believable bullet points, and then spending the rest of a lesson absolutely not taking notes. This means the art tells a story of distraction and creativity—perfect for collectors who appreciate narrative and humor over strict fantasy themes.
